Krościenko nad Dunajcem

Miasteczko wśród gór widziane z góry.

34-450 Krościenko nad Dunajcem Tourist region: Pieniny i Spisz

This charming tourist town lies between Pieniny National Park and Poprad Landscape Park in the Dunajec Valley.

Krościenko is the seat of Pieniny National Park – the first cross-border national park in Europe and the second in the world. The picturesque town is an excellent starting point for hiking, cycling, walking, horse riding and canoeing. Trails leading to the Pieniny (e.g., Trzy Korony, Sokolica), Gorce (e.g., Lubań) and Beskid peaks (e.g., Przehyba) lead from here. Krościenko is the terminus of the Dunajec River rafting route,  one of the most famous of all tourist trails. Featuring regular rafting trips, it has been a worldwide attraction for decades. Rafting down the Dunajec River gorge allows you to experience an unforgettable journey through this unique corner of the Pieniny Mountains.

A characteristic feature of Krościenko is the mineral springs on Zawodzie, on the right bank of the Dunajec River at the foot of Mount Stajkowa. Their health-promoting properties were discovered in the 1820s. The springs named ‘Stefan’ and ‘Michalina’ help treat respiratory tract diseases and those related to haemorrhages as well as the digestive system. The road to the springs used to be a promenade for visitors, lined with lime trees planted by Hieronim Dziewolski as a tribute to the victims of the Galician Slaughter in 1846. Remnants of the avenue still exist today: several lime trees are natural monuments. ‘Maria’ is a spring of an entirely different nature as it offers mild, slightly carbonated water with a pleasant taste. In addition, on the Market Square, you can see the Kazimierz Well, whose water flows from the Ziemróźka spring.

Founded in the 14th century, Krościenko also has many interesting monuments. These include the medieval Market Square, characteristic Pieniny buildings from the turn of the 20th century, and the brick Church of All Saints from the 14th century. A unique ornamental element of the Church is the well-preserved frescos from the 14th century. The exhibition on various aspects of nature conservation in the Pieniny National Park Museum is also worth visiting.

Krościenko nad Dunajcem was a winner in the 2020 contest Tourist Treasures of Małopolska in the ‘Place with an Atmosphere’ category.
